Grinder Not Grinding Evenly? Causes & Fixes (2026)

Uneven grind is the most common reason espresso shots turn out inconsistent. Most of the time it is buildup or settings, not a broken machine. Here is how to diagnose it and what actually fixes it.

Fix 1 — clean the burrs

Coffee oils and fines accumulate on the burrs and change how beans cut, producing clumps and mixed particle sizes. A burr brush or the maker's cleaning tablets restore consistency. This alone fixes a large share of "uneven" complaints, especially if the grinder has not been cleaned in a while.

Fix 2 — set it right and use the right beans

  • Re-dial the setting for your dose; a setting that is off makes every shot vary.
  • Avoid very oily dark beans in entry grinders — they clump and choke the chute. Medium roasts grind more evenly.
  • Grind just before brewing so oils do not sit and gum up the path.

If the grind looks even after cleaning but shots still vary, the dose or tamp is the next thing to check — unevenness is not always the grinder.

When it is the gear

If cleaning, settings and bean choice are correct and the grind is still inconsistent for espresso, the grinder is the limit. Entry grinders have wider steps and looser alignment; a grinder built for espresso gives finer, repeatable adjustment. See our grinder guide for upgrade options.

FAQ

Why is my espresso grind coming out uneven?

The usual causes are coffee oils and fines built up on the burrs, a setting that is too fine or too coarse for the dose, very oily dark beans clumping in the grinder, or burr misalignment. Buildup and settings explain most home cases; alignment matters more on higher-end grinders.

Will cleaning the burrs fix uneven grind?

Often, yes. Old oils and trapped fines change how beans feed and cut, so a burr cleaning with the maker's brush or tablets improves consistency noticeably. If it still looks uneven after a clean and a correct setting, the burrs or alignment are the next thing to check.

Do oily beans cause uneven grinding?

Yes. Very dark, oily beans clump and stick, which makes the grind less even and can choke the chute. Lighter to medium roasts grind more consistently in most home grinders. If you must use dark beans, grind right before brewing and keep the burrs clean.

When is it the grinder itself?

If cleaning, settings and bean choice are all correct and the grind is still inconsistent for espresso, the grinder is the limit. Entry grinders have wider steps and less precise alignment; a grinder built for espresso gives finer, repeatable adjustment. See our grinder guide for upgrade options.
