Espresso Machine Not Frothing Milk? Fixes (2026)

When the steam wand will not make microfoam, the cause is almost always one of four things: the machine is not in steam mode, the tip is clogged, the milk is wrong, or the technique is off. Walk through them in order before blaming the machine.

Step 1 — are you actually in steam mode?

After pulling a shot, switch the machine to steam and wait. The pump should go quiet and the boiler needs to reach pressure — many machines show a steady light or stop cycling when ready. Always purge the wand first (a short blast) to clear condensed water, then froth. Most "it won't steam" complaints end here.

Step 2 — clogged steam tip

A weak, one-sided wand is a clogged tip. When cool, unscrew it, soak in hot water or steam-hole cleaner, and clear each hole with the machine's pin. Reattach and purge. Strong, even steam means the tip was the culprit.

Wipe the wand with a damp cloth and purge again after every use — dried milk is what clogs tips in the first place.

Step 3 — milk and pitcher

  • Cold whole milk from the fridge froths most reliably while you learn.
  • Use a narrow, cold steel pitcher so you can feel and hear the vortex.
  • Technique: tip just under the surface for the first 1–2 seconds (soft tearing sound = adding air), then submerge to spin into microfoam. Big bubbles = air added too late or too hard.

Step 4 — when it is the machine

Why won't my espresso machine steam milk?

Most often the machine is still in brew mode, not steam mode: you must switch it to steam and wait for the boiler to reach pressure (the light or silence of the pump tells you). Other common causes are a clogged steam tip, milk that is too cold or too low-fat, or a pitcher technique that lets air in too early. Switch to steam mode and purge first, then re-test.
