Espresso Machine Not Heating Up? (Fix)
A machine that will not reach temperature makes every shot sour and weak — no recipe fix can save it. Most cases are warm-up or scale, not a dead machine. Here is the diagnosis order, and when the unit itself is the limit.

Fix it in order
- Give it time. 10-40 minutes depending on type. Pull a blank shot or two to flush cold water.
- Descale. If it has been months, limescale is likely insulating the boiler. Use the correct descaler for your water hardness.
- Check the thermostat setting. If adjustable, confirm it is not set low. PID machines hold temperature far more reliably.
- Test after warm-up. If it still will not reach ~90-96C after a full cycle and descaling, the element or thermostat has likely failed.
Consistently sour, weak shots from a cool-touch machine = check temperature before the grind. Low water temp alone causes sour espresso.
When it is the machine
- Failed element / thermostat. Powers on, warms partially, never reaches temp, descaling did not help → hardware fault.
- Unstable temperature. A basic steam-thermostat unit drifts; a PID or stable thermoblock holds the line. If temperature drift is a recurring problem, the machine is the ceiling.

Can scale stop a machine heating?

Is it a broken heating element?
If the machine powers on, warms partially but never reaches temperature, and descaling did not help, the heating element or thermostat has likely failed. That is a repair or replacement decision. A machine with stable temperature control (PID) is far less prone to this drift.
Does water temperature affect taste if low?
