What fair trade coffee actually means

Fair trade certification guarantees farmers a minimum price and safe working conditions. Not all fair trade coffee tastes better, but it ensures ethical sourcing. Look for the Fair Trade USA label or Rainforest Alliance.

Good fair trade brands: Equal Exchange, Larry’s Beans, Dean’s Beans. Price premium is $2-3 per bag over regular coffee. At $12-15 per 12oz, it is affordable. Note: fair trade does not always mean specialty quality - buy from a roaster who sources directly. Direct trade (roaster works directly with farms) often means better beans AND better prices.

Fair trade minimum price is $1.40/lb plus a 10c premium. Direct trade often pays $2-4/lb. For consumers, fair trade guarantees ethical sourcing but not necessarily better taste. Equal Exchange is the most established fair trade brand. Organic fair trade is available but costs $2-3 more.
